Cup shaped to flattened, often irregular, inner surface yellow-brown to dark brown, smooth, outer surface whitish to pale yellow brown, finely scurfy, attached to the substrate by a short stem, about 2 to 15 cm across

Microscopic Features

Spores ellipsoidal, smooth or very finely warty (14.5-17.5) x (8-10.5) µm2. Asci (260-300) x (13-14) µm2. Asci tips blued in iodine. Paraphyses equal, septate, tips usually slightly swollen.

Notes

Note that recent DNA analysis has indicated that P. cerea, P. micropus and P. repanda are synonyms for P. varia. Specimens growing on rotted manure may be confused with P. vesiculosa.
